Warner Bros. Revives Speedy Gonzales: What to Expect from the New Movie! (2026)

Warner Bros. is on an exciting path, bringing to life a movie featuring the iconic character Speedy Gonzales, with the creative vision of Jorge R. Gutierrez, known for his work on The Book of Life.

To put it plainly, Warner Bros. Discovery has had a tumultuous journey managing the beloved Looney Tunes franchise. Since its reformation in 2022, under the leadership of David Zaslav, the company has seemed intent on distancing itself from the classic animation legacy. This has included offloading its extensive library of cherished cartoons to platforms like Tubi, making the controversial decision to shelve films like Coyote Vs. Acme, and selling distribution rights for various Looney Tunes films, including titles like The Day The Earth Blew Up and the recently revived Coyote, to smaller distributors such as Ketchup Entertainment. Given this backdrop, it's quite surprising to hear that Warner Bros. Pictures Animation is now fully committed to developing a feature film focused on the speedy mouse, Speedy Gonzales, with Gutierrez at the helm as director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gutierrez has been hinting at this project for some time, and the announcement has now become official. Bill Damaschke, the president of WBPA, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We couldn’t be more excited to have [Gutierrez] reimagining Speedy Gonzales, one of our most beloved Looney Tunes characters, for today’s global audience."

Speedy Gonzales first burst onto the scene in the 1950s and notably won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for his debut. His latest appearance was in the 2021 film Space Jam: A New Legacy, where he was voiced by comedian Gabriel Iglesias. Interestingly, Warner Bros. had previously attempted to create a film centered around Speedy during the 2010s, with Eugenio Derbez slated for the role. However, in a 2024 interview, Derbez revealed that the project was shelved due to studio concerns regarding its perceived political correctness. This sparked an ongoing debate about whether Speedy represents a harmful ethnic stereotype. "The only ones offended are the Americans," claimed the Mexican actor, adding, "But we love Speedy Gonzales. He’s smart. He outsmarts the cats. He’s a hero. He gets cheese for his people. He’s fast."

This revival of interest in Speedy Gonzales raises intriguing questions about cultural representation in media. What do you think? Is Speedy a beloved character deserving of celebration, or does he perpetuate outdated stereotypes? Share your thoughts in the comments!
