Just in time for the holiday rush, a major milestone has been reached on one of the UK’s most critical road improvement projects—but not everyone is convinced it’s smooth sailing from here. The M25 and A3 Wisley interchange project, a £317 million endeavor, is finally nearing completion after years of disruption, and drivers are already feeling the relief. But here’s where it gets controversial: while many celebrate the removal of roadworks and speed limits, others question whether the project’s delays and environmental impact were worth the hassle. For months, commuters have endured lane closures, temporary traffic lights, and reduced speed limits as part of this ambitious scheme to upgrade the busiest section of the M25. Now, just in time for Christmas, National Highways has removed many of these restrictions, restoring lanes to full width and lifting the 50mph speed limit on the A3. Jonathan Wade, senior project manager at National Highways, expressed his team’s delight, stating, ‘These changes will be a big boost for festive travelers, but we still urge everyone to plan their journeys carefully.’ Edmund King, AA president, echoed this sentiment, adding, ‘These moves may bring a bit of Christmas cheer to those who’ve been stuck in daily congestion.’
And this is the part most people miss: the project isn’t just about easing traffic—it’s also about innovation and environmental stewardship. Among the eight new bridges built, the standout is the Cockcrow Bridge, the UK’s first heathland bridge, designed as a natural corridor for wildlife to safely cross the busy motorway. Installed in January, this 30-meter-long structure connects Ockham to Wisley Commons, blending infrastructure with conservation. But here’s the counterpoint: while the bridge is a win for wildlife, some argue that the project’s overall environmental footprint, including the demolition of the old Clearmount Bridge (which produced 3,000 tonnes of waste), raises questions about sustainability.
Speaking of bridges, the new 450-tonne Clearmount Bridge and the Wisley Lane Bridge were installed in November, providing improved access to Wisley Lane and the RHS Garden Wisley. Meanwhile, the 58-meter-long Redhill Footbridge, the final bridge in the project, was completed in July. Yet, not everything is wrapped up. Temporary traffic lights at the Seven Hills junction and Painshill roundabout remain, and an alternative route for the San Domenico/Starbuck site is set to open by March. The Cockrow heathland green bridge, though completed, will only open in February after a horse path and cattle grid are installed.
With the project’s completion now just months away, it’s worth reflecting on its scale and impact. Starting in spring 2022, the work faced a nine-month delay due to weather conditions, pushing the finish date to next spring. By then, over three-and-a-half years will have passed since the first shovel hit the ground. While the AA predicts 24.4 million cars will hit the roads this festive season, the question remains: will these upgrades truly stand the test of time, or are they just a temporary fix for a much larger problem?
