The wine industry in Germany is facing a challenging future as climate change impacts wine production. The country's winegrowers are struggling to protect their vines from the effects of a historically hot summer and low rainfall. This is particularly evident in the village of Spay, where the river Rhine has fallen to record lows, and the harvest is at risk. Weingart, a winegrower in Spay, describes the situation as dire, stating that the harvest is "hanging by a thread." The issue is not just about the current harvest but also about the long-term sustainability of wine production in Germany.
Climate change has brought both advantages and challenges for German winegrowers. While it has allowed them to experiment with grape varieties better suited to warmer climates and expand cultivation to new areas, the lengthier and more frequent periods of hot and dry weather are becoming a significant problem. These conditions make it difficult to irrigate the vines adequately and result in dwindling crop yields. Weingart, who has been in the family business for three decades, now feels that the dangers of climate change outweigh the advantages.
To combat these challenges, Weingart and other winegrowers are employing various strategies. One such strategy is mulching, which involves scattering straw between the vines to create a protective layer that prevents water from evaporating. This method, traditionally used to improve soil health, has now become crucial for helping vineyards withstand the warming climate. Weingart acknowledges that this approach is labor-intensive, requiring him to transport and scatter 1,000 small straw bales over the last four weeks.
Irrigation is another critical measure. The vineyard has a sophisticated system of piping that steadily drips water onto the ground around the vines' roots, which is turned on every few days. This system is particularly vital for young vines with shallow roots, as Weingart emphasizes that without irrigation, these areas would be "lost for the harvest." As a result, he no longer plants young vines without irrigation, considering the risk too high that they won't grow in the first few years.
Maintaining healthy soil is also essential. Weingart focuses on limiting weed growth to reduce competition for water, which helps the vines cope with extreme heat and drought. The harvest is expected in September, which is earlier than usual, but Weingart fears that without substantial rainfall, the crop will be poor. The vineyard's harvests have already been shrinking, dropping to around 5,000 liters, compared to 6,000 liters in the past.
The German Wine Institute reports that some winegrowers elsewhere in Germany have already started harvesting in the second week of August, which is exceptionally early. This early harvest is a response to the challenging conditions, and the industry is adapting to the changing climate. However, the future of German wine production remains uncertain, and the industry must continue to innovate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
