Auston Matthews, the Toronto Maple Leafs' captain, has etched his name in the franchise's history books by surpassing Hall of Famer Mats Sundin as the team's all-time leading goal-scorer. This achievement came in dramatic fashion during a game against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on Saturday, when Matthews scored his 421st goal in a Toronto uniform at 17:19 of the second period. The goal was a one-timer from the right circle, set up by Max Domi's puck battle win and Bobby McMann's precise pass, resulting in Matthews' second goal of the night and 20th of the season, giving the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead.
The 28-year-old Matthews, drafted first in 2016, achieved this feat in 664 games, compared to Sundin's 981 games with the team from 1995-2008. Matthews' goal-scoring prowess is further highlighted by his three Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy wins for the most goals in a season (2020-21, 2021-22, and 2023-24), and his status as the first U.S.-born player to lead the NHL in goals since Keith Tkachuk in 1996-97. Matthews' 69 goals in 2023-24 were the most by a Toronto player in a season, a record matched or surpassed by only nine other players in NHL history.
When asked about breaking Sundin's record, Matthews expressed admiration for the Hall of Famer, saying, "[Sundin] is awesome. I mean, I think, just getting to know him, there’s a reason why people talk so highly about him. Just the kind of leader that he was and the kind of person that he was and is. And I think that’s great. I think you kind of look at what happened with Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin last year, Ovechkin breaking his all-time goal record and the classy way Gretzky reacted. I think records are meant to be broken. And I think it’s cool to witness that. You’re supposed to leave the game better than it was when you got there, and guys are supposed to be better, and the game’s supposed to grow. So I think that’s just a part of the game in general."
Matthews' success extends beyond goal-scoring. He was one of the first six players named to the U.S. team for the 2026 Winter Olympics, and he was voted the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player in 2021-22. Maple Leafs forward John Tavares praised Matthews' shot and quick release, saying, "It’s the speed he gets it off with, and the velocity with which it goes. It’s special. It's easy to see why he's had so much success scoring goals."
